A JUKEBOX JURY WITH RUN ON

c/o chickfactor (summer 1995)

gail o'hara played some 7"s, opened beers, and ordered the thai.
run on is alan licht, david newgarden, sue garner and rick brown.

the jetset "happy in my mind" (little teddy)

david: sure this wasn't left over from the stephin merritt jukebox jury?
gail: yeah, I'm playing all the same records.
alan: is it david cassidy?
gail: it's better than ezra.
alan: who's ezra?
rick: why does he have an english accent on only a couple of words?
david: they're german.
gail: I think they're english.

viva satellite "leonardo" (teenbeat)

david: I've heard this described before, but I've never heard it.
alan: good rhythm section.
rick: is that a jethro tull sample?
david: it's a rock opera. it'd try to be fun and guess what it's about.
sue: a rock opera single? is it about the first airplane?
david: I hope this is not the reason eggs broke up.
alan: eggs broke up?
rick: they were our big hope to play with in d.c.
alan: if you wrote a 7" rock opera, what would it be about?
sue: my cat george.

the receptionists "you, me, sweet" (ba da bing)

sue: I like the rhythm section.
alan: I like the guitar sound. sounds like a plastic guitar. is this the mad scene?
gail: no, the receptionists.
david: have you picked the singles out specifically for us or is this just your way of getting rid of all the reviews you don't want to do?
gail: a random selection.

the brian jonestown massacre "methodrone"
(candy floss)

david: is this the right speed? I like it.
alan: sounds like a teen movie from the 80's.
rick: it's the smashing orange of the mid 90's.

king loser "the us down" (18 wheeler)

rick: the pogues?
alan: the rogues...better when the singer stops. he moans like ira.
sue: can I have another beer?
gail: according to some sources, this is the hottest live act in new zealand at the moment.
david: I guess not much is happening in nz these days.
gail: maybe their record totally sucks and they're great live.
sue: I wouldn't say this record totally sucks.
gail: I'm just trying to stir shit up.

romania "planes" (teenbeat)

david: is this duran duran?
alan: flock of seagulls?
gail: romania. they were recently juried in ap by member of duran duran who were obviously threatened by their brilliance.
alan: I saw them at a chickfactor party. they're like these two guys who wear silver suits. they're dead serious about this stuff.
rick: what do you mean serious?
gail: they're not jumping the new wave of new wave bandwagon. they've been doing this for years.
rick: they're not thinking they've invented a new style of music. they're copying gary numan and...
alan: they're keepers of the flame.

kendra smith "in your head" (4ad)

alan: bangles?
rick: you get a lot of new wave singles for chickfactor?
gail: it's kendra smith.
alan: I was close. the bangles.
sue: I like the way she's pronouncing the words, like she's got a big wad of cotton in her mouth, it sounds really good.
david: she sounded a lot better live without all the stuff.

the mad scene "shake" (dark beloved cloud)

david: this is the mad scene.
sue: I like this.
rick: I thought it was like morrissey with hassan hakmoun.
alan: this part sounds kind of like jethro tull.
david: we were actually asked to be on this compilation.
sue: oh yeah? I never knew we were asked.
david: we can't agree on a song for a compilation.
alan: this sounds like a rock opera.
gail: do you know the australian band nice? this reminds me of them.

the mountain goats and alastair gailbraith "blood royal" (walt)

sue: is this leonard cohen on four track? I like this a lot.
run on: they all like it.
rick: are the pogues big in new zealand?
gail: the mountain goats aren't from new zealand. they're from somewhere in the franklin bruno region.
rick: bruno valley.
gail: rumor has it john mountain goat is moving to chicago.
rick: to be closer to ajax.
alan: closer to that meal ticket.

dqe "tell me why the ivy twines" (colossal)

alan: is this a father and daughter act? when I saw them, it was like she was 17 and the guy looked like he was 35.

nicola six "blue moon" (delmore)

run on: big star.
alan: it's on sister lovers.
sue: I love that song.

neutral milk hotel "everything is" (cher doll)

alan: [only after hearing the sampled intro] is this the half-cocked soundtrack? [discussion wanders to kiss, how badly run on wants its music played on homicide, to doormat publishing co.]
alan: that one part sounded like jesus and mary chain.

sportsguitar "gong gong" (sub pop)

sue: I like the way this one sounds.
david: I like the fact that lots of bands are using moogs but it makes it hard to find them.
sue: is that a moog?
rick: that's a guitar.
alan: they weren't really great live.

the magnetic fields "rats in the garbage of the western world" (merge)

david: do you think this is old new wave or new new wave?
sue: new, it's too noncommittal..
rick: it's too complicated to be like early human league.
alan: howard devoto.
rick: it's a different kind of pompous than howard. it kinda reminds me of that first human league record. I have a soft spot for them.

silver jews and nico "old new york" (chunk)

alan: steve's voice has somehow emulated all his friends from college. I want to hear the original person with that accent. it's a southern accent so it can't be steve, he's from the west coast.
gail: you think it's southern?
alan: bob nastanovich's accent is definitely southern.
david: bobby nastanovich has been a really big inspiration to me. he's a former DJ who really can't play any instruments, he plays in a band and does what I do. he plays percussion.
rick: but he smiles. you always have that angst-ridden grimace of a look on your face.
sue: he also moves around.
alan: very side project. they went downhill after tanya left the band.

the dead c "metal heart" (siltbreeze)

alan: flying saucer attack? bardo pond?
gail: you've seen them. the dead c.
rick: I have this on my stack of records at home I haven't played yet. this is the first time I heard a dead c record.
alan: I have this record. I think I usually listen to the other side.

daisy spot "bring down the nite" (echonet)

rick: they don't sound like the pogues.
sue: I kinda like this, it's a nice tune.
david: it's sort of entertaining when you hear grenadine or someone you know do stuff like this but I'm completely bored when it's...
gail: that's so sad david.
rick: this is a million times better than grenadine.
alan: I've never heard grenadine.
rick: grenadine is so self-conscious.
alan: it's like mickey and sylvia.

sparklehorse "spirit ditch" (slow river)

sue: I like that line. I like this.
david: I like how you hear what he ate for lunch.
rick: is that a sample of record noise or is that real record noise now?

henry's dress "all this time for nothing" (omnibus)

alan: I like this. I like how the bass drops out.
sue: oh, I don't like it at all when the bass drops out.
david: I like it when the bass doesn't play all the time.

appolonia heck "god only knows" (echonet)

alan: this is bizarre. it's the beach boy's song with a totally different melody.
david: totally changes melody.
alan: same melody, it's just changing chords. I read this article about brian wilson, and it said paul mccartney said this was the greatest song ever written. paul said, well, if I never write a better song then what's the point of writing any more songs? what's the point in life?
sue: weren't they especially competitive?

amoebic ensemble "driving music"
(simply indefensible)

rick: I know this record.
david: can live without it. they're better live.
rick: and their longer stuff is best.

verbena "I say so" (merge)

rick: when we saw them, sue said they sounded like lynyrd skynard.
sue: southern boogie bands, but this doesn't sound like that.
rick: she said it in a favorable way. I only know two lynyrd skynard records.
alan: they're good. this is a little like l.s. mac turned to me when they were playing and said the two frontpeople look like greg and marcia brady.
david: we played this show with them in chapel hill, and we did this radio show and we'd never heard them. the DJ said, "they sound exactly like butterglory." so when he played it, I said, "I can't believe it's not butterglory!" and apparently the band, who were listening, were not thrilled to hear that.
alan: when they were done playing they said, "stick around for cosloy's band." earlier in the set, they'd said "we don't sound like butterglory, we're not from lawrence, kansas."

bunnybrains "tohnny (monster mix)" (matador)

alan: lester bangs?
david: I was almost decapitated by flying bunnies at one of their shows.
gail: rumor has it sean penn left the blues explosion show cause he was being hassled by this band.
david: I'd rather hear sean penn sing than this guy. but they're the nicest band on matador.

hot toasters "fish & doctor" (drag city)

david: this is a drag city release.
alan: palace brothers?
rick: this isn't koretsky's group, is it?
sue: does john zorn have something to do with this?

belreve "ron" (slumberland):

sue: they were catchy.
