Bunnybrains
July 14, 1995

Third full-length from the Danbury, Conn., PROS who include former members of Sonic Youth, Plant & Page, Great White, Vatican Commandos, etc. Kurt tribute kicks the album off, then the ride gets really scary. I once wrote that there was no such thing as a good band from Connecticut. While this is still true, being "good" is very overrated.

Through their self-released singles and CD’s, to their most recent Blackjack long-player Bunny Majick, the BB’s have won an international reputation for annoying & entertaining many dozens of people, sometimes all at once. In fact, Adam Yauch of the the Beastie Boys was recently quoted in a trade advertisement as saying that the Bunny Brains were one of his earliest influences. The Bunny Brains are perhaps best known for their stint last autumn blowing Sebadoh off the stage night after night. They weren’t opening for Sebadoh, they were just blowing them off the stage.

This LP is a vinyl-only release with extra-special items stuffed inside some copies (birth control pills? Knicks playoff tickets? rare back issues of The Big Takeover ?). The album was supposed to be released on easter weekend ’95, but was delayed (because some of us are Jewish).

The band began in 1988 at S.U.N.Y. Purchase with a lineup of Bob (Beme Seed) Barrett, Elisa Flynn and Malcolm Tent. They folded in Eg the Poet shortly thereafter because of his adept take on faux-performance art. Splattering himself with apple sauce, jellies, meats, sauces and excrement was all in a day’s work. Soon, Warren (Violent Children) Kennedy joined up along with Irishman Neville McDermott on guitar. They cut a single around this time, garnering disgust from friends and family and gamely plowed on for one and a half years. Wendy Leahy, joined in 1992, drank herself silly and quit 10 months later. They released another single, lost Warren, Neville and, finally, founding member Malcolm Tent by 1993. Raimondo hooked up to a guitar, the Human Davo played bass and steady-hand Pete Partenio remained behind the drums for the four years of changes. This is how it stands now:

Raimondo — consumer of anti-depressants and Guinness stout is waxen
Davo — approaching 40 with a pork chop in either hand
Pete — fucking like a 15-year-old in the bathroom at the Moose Lodge
Dan — blithely observing from his velvet throne
