Ira Kaplan de la Yo La Tengo

Who doesn't love the way Ira Kaplan (Yo La Tengo) looks? Still, we'd be the last to expect that his signature style would so thoroughly sweep the Matador office. Sure, everybody loved the low tops, but who could forget his 1993 staples: the tuxedo tee-shirt and parachute pants combo? Yikes.

Just a few examples of Ira fashion gone awry, captured in real-time by the Accutron Office Cam

A disturbing sidenote to the story is the recent development of hooded bank robberies sweeping the nation. See the SF Weekly's Mail-Order Bandits: Armed robbers collect stamps and cash at city post offices to get what we mean. Obviously, impersating Ira was not enough for these clever crooks, who would stop short of nothing to send a symbolic "fuck you" to Yo La Tengo.

New to the site: the first evidence that the a 7th issue of Escandalo may actually happen -- Why Popular Music Really Does Suck. Carrie McLaren talks to Rick Lyon, a composer of music for commercials.

MAY 22 + 1998

Some of you have probably noticed by now but we've recently handed over our online catalog sales to CDNow. From now on, expect to see your orders in a matter of days, thanks to their super speedy sales staff. We are damn grateful to Catalogue.com for building our old online catalog from scratch.. but our in-house mailorder staff (i.e. Russ) was simply no match for the instant service the net pros deliver. CDNow's special Matador page will be updated regularly with new releases, specials, sound clips, and all that.

The bad news: CDnow doesn't carry all our vinyl. We do, though, and Matador mailorder will continue on as it has before this whole crazy web thing, selling 7", LPs, CDs, t-shirts, etc. via the good ol' U.S. post. If you'd like a catalog, email Russ with your real world address.

FUCK has a new 7" out, a split single with their charming German friends Tocotronic (same band they toured with). Fuck is also recording a new album at Easley Studios in Memphis, TN.

CaveLiz Matador in the media dept... Lyle says the lyrics to LIZ PHAIR's "Chopsticks" are recited in that movie Horse Whispers (no word on Warren Betty rapping any ARAB STRAP, though); and Elizabeth Wurtzel quotes "Fuck and Run" in her book Bitch...could these authors be among the 76% of music consumers for whom it is "very important" to have "lyrics included in the CD booklet"? ...and word has it that Jim Carney of Time Magazine was on the McLaughlin Group talking about poor, dead Frank Sinatra and Carney's other fave raves GUIDED BY VOICES. None of us saw it, though.

Some facts for you and yours:

Steven Malkmus is presently in New York recording, Silver Jews style. The new album will be released on Drag City as soon as Neil Hagerty's book recoups.

A new edition of What's Up Matador VHS will soon hit the stores. This time a certain Chain Gang video will be included. Meanwhile, What's Up host Bill Boggs can be seen in the new box office smash "Species II" (or "Species Two" as some people like to call it) and the Food Channel program Bill Boggs' Food Corner. Much like Spoon, Bill's relationship with Matador will clearly catapult him to much deserved stardom. We hope.... in other video news: SPORTSGUITAR has made a video for "Romeo Goes" that might be popping up on your TVs soon (or might not).

Much as I hate to play favorites, the tape of the upcoming CAT POWER making the rounds is easily the best thing I've heard all year. (then again, I've been listening to nothing but the Call Me Madam original cast LP). Truly amazing, the best thing Chan has recorded to date, especially if you dug the track on What's Up, Matador? (a different version of "Back of Your Head" appears on the full-length). Recorded in Australia with Jim and Mick from the Dirty 3, this one remains untitled, but is slated for release in September. We'll put some songs from the record up before then, though....you all REALLY need to hear this.

Deborah Orr, our publicist's email address has changed. If you need to reach her, the new address is deborah@matador.recs.com.

THE JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION has an unreleased track, "Blues Explosion Attack," on an upcoming Dub Narcotic comp (K Records). Called Selector Dub Narcotic, it's due out May 19 and also features the Dub Narcotic Sound System, Make-Up, Versus, Beck, K.G., Miranda July, and a bunch of others who have recorded at Dub Narcotic studios.

No "for-the-record" news yet about the BELLE & SEBASTIAN album, but hopefully we'll have some information very soon....YO LA TENGO have completed work on a collaborative album with Jad Fair that you'll also be hearing more about.

Regarding the BETTIE SERVEERT EP of Velvet's covers mentioned earlier: Brinkman has pushed back the release date so we won't have any to sell via mailorder until June. No need to email Russ; when they come in, we'll let you know.

Some new things on our release schedule, namely, an awesome solo album from Robert Pollard called Waved Out, and GUIDED BY VOICES documentary VHS Watch Me Jumpstart from director Banks Tarver (Clay from Chavez's brother). A few dates have changed as well so see the page to get 'em straight.

A couple of other new things on the website: Helium's Brush with the 70s. Mary and Kendall recount their show with Arlo Guthrie. And a press release for Jean Smith's new book The Ghost of Understanding.

The album's called "TELEconned: We Want The Airwaves" and has Soul Coughing singing "Lazy Bones" with parts of Guided By Voices "Motor Away."

Couple new links for you, here and abroad: Tommy Keene and JSBX interviews, both from Magnet; a Cornelius interview from SF Bay Guardian, Liquor Giants review in Salon, and Sleater-Kinney Concert Reviews.

This Hank the Dwarf email that's been going around the net: WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE??? Subvert People Magazine? (see this page if you don't know what I'm talking about.) Come on, Howard Stern vs. Leonardo...since when are dueling celebrities "subversive"? People couldn't BUY better advertising. If you want to be REALLY subversive, turn off the f--king [fucking] TV!!!! Unplug the internet! --CM
